TWS Energy Storage Project Case Series 12 | TWS Technology Constructs Sustainable Green Microgrid, Propelling German Wood Products Enterprise towards Energy Transformation and Robust Development
09/05/2025

Baden-Württemberg, located in southwest Germany, is not only a region known for its charming Black Forest scenery and rich cultural heritage, but also stands as one of Europe's most economically powerful and competitive regions. It serves as a vital agricultural, industrial, and logistics hub in Germany. The state boasts fertile land areas, and mountains and rivers mainly characterize its terrain. It is rich in forest resources, which have nurtured the development of the sawmill industry. For a long time, the sawmill industry has played a crucial role in the region’s economic structure. Modern sawmills require significant power due to the use of advanced electrical machinery, particularly during peak processing seasons. The reliance on traditional coal power and the intermittent supply of renewable energy have led to soaring electricity costs and a decline in production stability for sawmills. Balancing high-energy-consuming production and green transformation has become a development challenge faced by wood product enterprises.

In May 2025, TWS Technology, in collaboration with a local sawmill, designed and implemented a microgrid energy storage system to enhance the utilization of renewable energy and reduce operating costs. The storage system boosts the power of 500 kW and capacity of 745 kWh, and is composed of four TWS ProeM liquid-cooling storage cabinets, one 500 kW PCS, and one DC combiner. Through the combination of ESS + PV + diesel generator”, a stable and low-carbon microgrid is formed with energy complementarity. The microgrid system not only enables the sawmill to achieve electricity self-sufficiency, but also allows for the clean power output to the loads of surrounding schools, businesses, and residents, thus maximizing the value of energy storage system.

With the microgrid system, the utilization rate of renewable energy has increased from 62.5% to 95.8% and the power supply stability of the sawmill has advanced from 60% to over 90%, ensuring the consistent and stable production of the sawmill, as well as fuel cost saving of Euro 62000 per year. Besides ensuring operational stability and enhancing economic benefits, the operation of this energy storage system has also contributed to local environmental protection. It helps reduce the carbon footprint by 35% and lower carbon emissions by around 164 tons annually.

As a global leading ESS solution provider, TWS Technology is dedicated to providing energy storage solutions for all application scenarios to customers and the market. This successful operation of the microgrid energy storage system at the sawmill in Germany not only resolves the energy predicament for the stable operation and long-term development of the sawmill but also demonstrates the perfect coexistence of industrial inheritance and ecological future. Looking ahead, TWS Technology will continue upholding the strategic core of "technological innovation + localized operation", fully leverage the social and economic benefits of storage technology, integrate advanced storage technologies with a broader range of industries, driving green transitions across all sectors, injecting new vitality into regional economic development, creating value for the global market and contributing to build a greener, low-carbon and sustainable future.
